Why is it that Aidan O'Brein has 2 horses named after big races, ie Cherry Hinton, named after a village, but is also the name of a feature Race ran at newmarket in july, The Cherry Hinton Stakes (Group 2)

The same is also true of Nell Gwyn, another horse he trains named after some kings wife lol, but also, The Nell Gwyn Stakes - Another high class race.

I am aware u cannot name ur horses after winners of feature races, but surely its wron that u can name them after the race itself

  1. Firstly, the owners, prior to racing as a 2 year old would name the horse/filly. O'Briens trainers are wealthy and shrewd so would take any advantage for their investment.

Whilst there are races named Nell Gwyn, Cherry Hinton etc they also refer to other things.

Finally, they are Irish Horses and the races you refer to are English. Different countries.. different cultures...different standards..different rules of racing.!!!!..K.Fallon springs to mind!!!!!!!!!

  2. level of intellegence i'm afraid!!!is it really so difficult to choose a name for a horse?pick a nane from mom and dad.eg dad named treasure chest/mom named open the box.(answer) take the lid off?thats how i thought they did it.poor example, but i hope you get the idea, thanx.

  3. Because bookmakers sponsor racing events and such things help confuse punters making it easier for bookies to have yet another reason to refuse to pay out!!!  Banning this would put them in a bad mood and race organisers would suffer as a result!

Ok its a rubbish answer but it's the best I can do!

It also pisses me off that two horses can have the same name (they can if 1st one hasnt won a feature race by time 2nd is registered) or a horse and a greyhound can have the same name, if they run on the same day and it wins bookies wont pay out if you didn't specify which race you ment even if the winner was favourite and the other one was 500/1

Chipper - Aiden O'Brien is an Irish trainer as are the horses he trains so Irish Rules apply to him, not English as regards registration etc.  If the Brittish Association banned Irish horses they'd have pretty empty circuits!

  4. I seems to me that there really is no issue here.  The race is named after a town/city and the race is named after the same town/city.  There is no advantage for a horse named that way, there is no issue betting a horse with that name, so what might be the problem?  If I name a horse San Francisco Bay and there is a race in California called the San Francisco Bay Handicap who cares?  I'm going to run that horse in lots of other races and lots of other places that have nothing to do with San Francisco city/bay/street/.  I think it's pretty interesting that a horse with the same name (created by the owners before the horse ever ran) might actually get to run in that race.

    No big deal for me.

  5. Actually Aidan O'Brein is the trainer of these horses so he had nothing to do with their naming.

If it were against the rules of the British Racing Association they they would not have allowed these names.

  6. you are worrying to much about nothing...relax

  7. The only reason you can't name them after winners is that it will cause confusion. The name needs to be retired with the horse. It doesn't cause confusion if you name a horse after a race, because presumably you understand that one is a horse and the other is not.
