  1. A butterfly is a butterfly because they tend to flutter by.

  2. someone not wearing his glasses confused a butterfly with a fly that landed on his butter

  3. Just a common name.  Why is a jelly fish called a Jelly fish.  It is not a fish etc.  Common name are useless because of this fact.  Scientific names are the best way to know exactly what organisms you are speaking about.

  4. The original name for a butterfly was flutter by, & that's why is called a butterfly bcz it flutters, meaning: to move lightly & quickly, and that is what a butterfly does.

  5. Apparently (although this does sound like an urban legend...) butterflies used to be called flutter-bys, and then got mixed up over time. Flutter by makes sense, but I can't give you anything other than anecdotal evidence that this is true.
