Why Is the sound of nails on a chalkboard so horrible?

I don't mean what happens to make it sound bad, I mean why do we think it sounds bad? I'm probably talking a load of rubbish but why are there some noises that we cannot stand? Is it because of what they represent? Or is it just because they are painful to hear? Let me know what you think.

  1. friction and the uhmm not fabric but the uhm gosh i cant think of the word but of the chalkboard and the chalk


  2. i think its because of the vast number of frequencies that the action creates (especially the high ones)
