Question:

Why Isn't My Fish Tank Getting Dirty?

I have a small sized glass fish tank with a filter. I have three Shubunkins, very greedy so that always results in constipation! I used to have to clean them out once every 4/5 days or when the tank went cloudy but recently I can go withought cleaning them out for 3 weeks? Why? They do not smell, the tank isn't cloudy and the filter doesn't seem to be bunged up. I have not changed anything, I still feed them as I always did and for some strange reason they don't need cleaning out. I'm not complaining, I hate cleaning them out! But it has to be done and I will do it if they need a bath!

  1. I have a tank with a filter too, 3 common goldfish, and 1 moor ( the other passed away not long ago ) maybe we can share tips sometime.

As long as you have a good working filter or pump, change it often, and you have plenty of good bacteria who take care of the excess mess... i'd say that you have nothing to worry about :) Your Shubunkins used to poo alot didn't they? The bacteria had alot to eat, and then multiplied.. even thought you changed the water, some survived.

That's as much as I know, as I only got my filter about a week ago, now I know what to expect. And thanx for that ;]

  2. Well, for three shubunkins, you'll need a 75 gallon tank.

They are pond fish, not typically aquarium fish because they get so large.

If it's a new tank, it might be because the tank might have finally had a chance to develop the bacteria that keep the tank fairly clean. You should still do 25% water changes once a week though just to be safe. Water can be crystal clear and deadly to fish.

  3. you have a decent filter and it has a the good bacteria it needs to keep the tank clean the reason  why most tanks go all cloudy is due to constant water changes which is adding more chlorine into the water
