  1. Technically last years gold medalist was a Canadian....

  2. Perhaps because the Koreans invented the martial art?  That usually gives a country a good advantage, you know, being the country that actually created the sport, this ain't rocket science.

  3. It is after all a Korean art. It is the national sport. Likely it would be won by a Korean.

  4. The Koreans seem to have a 'chip' on their shoulders regarding certain martial arts, such as Judo (or Yudo) and Tae Kwon Do (even with the Asian form of 'Chess' - the university of Seoul offers a Phd in Asian 'chess').

The Koreans did in fact invent Tae Kwon Do.  And they also claim that 'Yudo' is a Korean development.  The Japanese are still the best at Judo, but the Koreans are slowly creeping up.

Also, as the rest of Asia becomes more technologically advanced, industrialized, and affluent$$, their populations have more gentle leisure time (tennis, ping-pong, golf) and stop pursuing the physical martial arts.  But Korea is still a little bit behind the rest of Asia, primitive in some opinions, and still pursue the martial arts as a form of individual accomplishment and national prestige.  For example, the Buddhist monestaries in rural Korean areas are still run as in the 12th centuries as opposed to the rest of Asia where temples have electricity, heat, and running water.

You can see this attitude in the United States as working class neighborhoods have a lot of boxing gymnasiums while yuppie neghborhoods do not.  The more affluent classes pursue less violent exertions (golf, tennis, yachting, etc.).

So the Koreans are putting a lot of psychological and physical and monetary effort into their Tae Kwon Do.  Probably more so than any other nation.

  5. This question itself is ridiculous!!!! They practiced well ,they did it well !!!!! That's why!!!!!

  6. You have gotten some good answers. I have to agree with them. It is a Korean Art. It is there national sport. They practice it better than the rest of the world. Maybe they have more better schools than the rest of the world.

  7. As someone who works in South Korea, let me say Tae Kwon Do gyms are everywhere, EVERYWHERE.

Ubiquitous doesn't even begin to describe it.  It's quite common to see kids running around after school in TKD uniforms, many of them have black belts and black-and-red belts.  Whether those come from McDojo belt-factories is a matter of debate.  But it is the national sport, TKD was born here and Koreans are a very proud people, and if you think something belongs to you, damned if you're going to see someone beat you at your own game.

It's a matter of national pride.

For the US and China it's just something else to win at.
