The mane is like a crown, but the real reason is it is the top land predator of Africa. In early days lions were the symbol of courage. Lions fight other lions from rival prides when their territory overlaps and are fearless fighters. Also kill hyenas. So although one may assume the elephant is the king, but elephants won't be eating lions when lions pass away, lions will eat the elephants when it passes on. Crocodiles are more powerful but basically aquatic.

The mane. That heavy tuft of hair on the male lion is a crown of maturity. In the animal kingdom of that region, it is the lion that is the chief predator. Even elephants thing twice before crossing a lion because a sizable pride has been known to bring down a bull elephant.

In all habitats their is a food chain. A food chain is basically survival of the fittest. The better addapted the animal the higher up on the food chain. The lions main competitor is the tiger. Through a series of the experiments on the science channel it was discovered that a lion could defeat the tiger. Theirfore the lion simply cannoy be beaten making it the moster powerful animal of the jungle.

Mainly because they are the top level predator, also called apex predators. This effectively means that nothing preys on them.  Perhaps also because they need to survey their territory carefully, in the way a king might do this of his kingdom.
