Why Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather has lost its charm – Boxing Special
After three years of speculation, fans are still not sure as to whether WBC welterweight titlist will lock horns with former WBO welterweight titlist Manny Pacquiao. Considering the amount of rumours being bombarded on the internet, there are possibilities
of both men being in the ring finally. However, as per their officials, the fight is not yet possible.
HBO analyst Larry Merchant spoke about the entire scenario with ESPN.com, believing the mega-bout between Mayweather and Pacquiao is still on hold.
“They're not talking about [Manny] Pacquiao next, and if it's not Pacquiao, there are two guys I'm thinking of. One would be Timothy Bradley, or Canelo Alvarez. Those are the two. If Canelo can win on Sept. 15 [against Josesito Lopez], then maybe his next
fight would be that huge event, against Mayweather,” said Merchant.
He added, “There are lots of variations. But keep in mind, Mayweather has always picked the guy with first priority being helping him generate the biggest possible pay-per-view audience.”
The reason why fans are no more as interested and thrilled about the fight as they once were is that both the fighters have lost their stint.
Mayweather last fought against Miguel Cotto, which was an easy fight for the unbeaten American but he could not knock Cotto out. Instead, Cotto was able to push the fight until the twelfth round, making sure Mayweather goes through a good beating.
It was the very first time fans saw Mayweather bleed from his nose and mouth. The once considered indestructible finally bled in the ring.
On the other hand, Manny Pacquiao last fight ended up in a split decision loss. He lost his WBO welterweight title to Timothy Bradley via controversial split decision. Even though fans in the arena and all around the world condemned the decision, the judges
maintained their stance. Even fellow fighters believed Pacquiao won the show, but eventually nothing happened.
Pacquiao met his promoter Bob Arum last week to decide his next opponent. After the meeting, Arum revealed Pacquiao was insisting for a showdown against Mayweather but he denied it. According to Arum, Mayweather is in jail right now and no one on his behalf
can assure whether he will fight Pacquiao or not.
Pacquiao is already scheduled to fight on November 10, a date that is too close for Mayweather to catch up with.
Despite the reasons being put forth by promoters and analysts, fans have lost their interest in the mega-bout. Both the fighters are already on the verge of retirement, and a fight now would just be a show to earn and not to entertain.
Mayweather and Pacquiao, both fighters are known for their punching power, speed and resilience, and all of these three traits can wear off with age. In their recent fights, it was pretty obvious that both of them are old now and the thrill they used to
bring to the ring is no longer there.
In a nutshell, for sure the fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather will be epic, yet it would not be as memorable as it would have been two years before. Probably, both of them are too late to catch up with each other.
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao would be Ali vs. Tyson of today, only if it happens in time or else fans would not care about it anymore.
