  1. Because the average iq is about 100-110.Anything over 130 is said to be pretty exceptional.

  2. With IQ, 100 is the norm and standard deviations are in increments of 15.  Two standard deviations above or below the norm are considered significant...above being gifted, below being mentally retarded.

  3. People like to hang out with their peers, right? Well, an IQ test result of 130 means that your cognitive ability, as measured by that test, is stronger than 96% of the population, give or take. The members of Mensa like to hang out with the 4% every now and again, because they can have conversations with each other they may not be able to have with everybody else.

I knew a member of Mensa who liked to go talk with other members about mushrooms, for instance. Most of us don't have much to say about mushrooms. People on this end of the bell curve, like folks with Asperger's, tend to have obscure interests.

There are similar organizations, including one for the top 0.1%, the ones whose IQs measure higher than 99.9% of people in general.

  4. Because that's what's considered genius. Having an IQ in this range, I can tell you, when you are smarter than a lot of other people, it can be difficult to find others who have the same interest. All my friends, the very few I have, have IQ that are high too. You want to talk to people who can hold a conversation with you.
