Why? My throat swelled up after drinking Odwalla "Serious eNergy" Juice Drink (Tropical Energy) with Mushrooms

I noticed the back of my throat closing up after I drank some Odwalla "Serious eNergy" that has "Yerba Mate", "Green Tea Extract", and "Guarana Seed Extracts".

** Found out it contains mushrooms?? (reishi and cordyceps mycelium, mushroom derivatives) 250 milligrams of reishi and 750 milligrams of cordyceps.

You might be allergic to mushroom or anything else, you should tell your doctor about it next time you go, they have texts that let you know what you're allergic to.

You, of course, will want to check with a doctor if this becomes any sort of enduring problem...

While you could be allergic to any of the ingredients in the drink, it is pretty common for people to get severe allergic reactions to raw mushrooms.

Most of the time, it is the spores that one reacts negatively to, but the spores are stuck on the whole mushroom when it goes in the blender.

There are *NO* known mushrooms that cause allergic reactions without eating some of the mushroom or getting the spores in your mucosa membranes (or whatever the soft tissue of nose, eyes, mouth is collectively called).

Possibly the silver lining to this, if you were in fact allergic to the mushrooms ingredients, is that cooking the mushroom will usually neutralize the reaction before it happens.

I think since odwalla loves their fresh ingredients you might be out of luck on that flavor, but not on mushrooms in general!

Sounds like an allergic reaction.  Need to find out the ingredients and try to figure out which one it might have been.

I wouldn't drink that anymore.

It was a definite allergic reaction and be real careful with those kind of allergies as it can well be life threatening.  

Some people with them kind of allergies carry an Adrenalin injection with them for emergencies.  

As for which of the ingredients in the drink you are allergic to, you will have to go and get tested to find out, but i doubt it is yerba mate or the green tea as they are not known for allergens, the mushrooms or the guaranna seed may be the more likely culprit.  

I  can't stress to you how important it is for you to find out what your allergic to as it sounds as if you where one very lucky person.

You are allergic to one of the substances in that product. It is very possible that you could die from your throat closing up worse next time. You might want to get tested to determine which ingredient you are allergic to. It could be in other products.
