Why New York Mets’ R.A. Dickey deserves CY Young Award for 2012 regular season?-Part 4
In order to be the best pitcher in the National League, the ability to respond to the pressure effectively can be a decisive factor. This can be a major parameter based on which the hurlers can be classified with respect to the degree of perfection they
maintain.
The greatest test of a pitcher is not when he follows a great outing in the last game but when he does so after a dismal show in the previous match. How he takes the criticism, responds to it and the way he keeps confidence in his ability are the factors
that show the magnitude of perfection he can achieve in his career.
Even the Mets’ manager Terry Collins is extremely impressed by the way Dickey bounced back on number of occasions from the situations where his decline was imminent. He hails his contribution for the team throughout the season and states that almost every
type of pitches he threw reflected complete command and control from his part.
"It's been incredible to watch him all year long," said Terry Collins. "The command, the movement, the swings that have been taken. He lost it for, what, a week? Two starts maybe? And now it's back."
Therefore, as Dickey has come through successful from the unfriendly and mentally teasing situations, he deserves to be rated highly for future. Even if his past record is not great, the current excellence by him guarantees that he is going to maintain it
for a foreseeable future.
Most of the pitchers that are queuing up for the 2012 CY Young Award boast terrific career records. The kind of credentials they stand for naturally had diverted the attention of the fans toward them as the season began. Therefore, there should be hardly
any surprise to know that they have lived up to their reputation.
On the other hand there is someone who has not gained the spotlight to such an extent ever since he made the Major League debut is conquering every single battle in the season. Dickey even surpassed those hurlers with recognised reputations in the National
League. He has reached such a level from where toppling his stature and eclipsing it for the case of CY Young Award is almost impossible.
Dickey is setting new standards. The fans now can never write off a pitcher who has always failed to demonstrate his talent. While obviously the expectations vanish when a hurler struggles throughout the seasons that have been played by him in the Major
League, Dickey for a while has dented the natural attitude which was maintained toward him at the start of this year.
Above all what takes Dickey away from any other pitchers is the spirit with which he is playing. Earlier when the manager Terry Collins discussed the idea of using him on the short rest in order to alleviate burden on the rest of the starters, Dickey was
of the view that he is ready to do it for the team but if somebody believes that in this way he plans to solidify his credentials for the award then he is wrong.
“I would not want to be on three days’ rest purely to win more games,” Dickey said. “If we can claw back in this thing and they think that I give our team the best chance to win, or a good chance to win, then I’m willing to do that. And I’ve voiced that.
But we’ll see where it goes.”
Still there are reasonable numbers of games remaining in the season. Dickey cannot afford to grow complacent. If he really wins the Cy Young Award, he is going to sustain his success through the rest of the season as the recognition is well deserved.
