Why New York Yankees brought back Ichiro Suzuki – MLB News
New York Yankees made an important announcement on Tuesday when they confirmed two year $13 million signing of outfielder Ichiro Suzuki.
In some ways, Ichiro can help the Yankees restore their lost pride. The Yankees were hammered in the American League Championship Series by the Detroit Tigers in 2012, losing four straight games against their AL rivals. However, there was one bright spot
for the Yankees; Suzuki.
There is a reason why the Yankees offered Ichiro a two year deal. Although he is 39 years old; in the twilight of his career, Ichiro is fitter than most of his competitors in Major League Baseball.
Ichiro had a wonderful time on the plate last season as he hit .322 with 5 home runs and 14 stolen bases. In his 67 appearances for the Yankees, he showed the stuff he is capable of. It is no surprise the Yankees agreed to offer him a lucrative contract.
“It was reported that Suzuki took about $1 million less than what the Phillies offered, because he was so comfortable playing among veterans like Derek Jeter”, said Jeff Bradley of nj.com in his post.
“I believe the Yankees organization appreciates that there is a difference between a 39-year-old who has played relying only on talent, and a 39-year-old who has prepared, practiced, and thought thoroughly through many experiences for their craft. I am very
thankful, and I will do my best to deliver on their expectations,” said Suzuki in an interview.
With Suzuki back in the lineup, the Yankees could start with three lefties in the outfield the next season. Curtis Granderson and Brett Garner are expected to start the centre and left field respectively.
Ichiro, himself, wanted to be re-signed by the Yankees. He loved playing in New York and what he did in a short period of time made him a fan favourite. It is clear he is not after money. All he wants at this stage of his career is to bring a struggling
team to its feet. It will be interesting to see if Ichiro can help the Yankees win the World Series title in 2013.
