Why Roger Federer is unstoppable?
In another enthralling mix of some hardcore tennis, the world number two Roger Federer brushed aside the Scotsman Andy Murray as easily as if he was eating cheese. The chastising drubbing of Andy Murray at the hands of the Swiss maestro in a 6–4, 6–2 lop-sided
match should send a shiver down Roger Federer’s opponents’ spines as he gears up to face off Soderling in his last round robin match before qualifying for the semis.
Federer often struggles against the mercurial Scotsman, except when it matters, most prominently in their two Grand Slam finals. However, he reigned supreme in the O2 Arena by dropping just eight points on serve to give Andy Murray the hiding of his life.
After bagging his second win of the tournament in such classic style, the Swiss has now become favourite to reach the semi-finals. However, to make absolutely sure of that possibility, the Swiss maestro will have to beat Robin Soderling after Soderling beat
David Ferrer 7–5, 7–5. Federer only managed to get into the semi-finals last year after some complicated calculations were made to calculate the top two contenders’ points in the group stage.
If however Federer manages to keep up his form, and repeat his performance, he should have no worries about arithmetic calculations as his King of Tennis skills will make the need for a calculator redundant.
The Swiss played some breathtaking tennis to show the world why he is a 16 time Grand Slam winner and why Andy Murray is still trying to chase his first. Displaying his silky smooth tennis prowess, the Swiss star reduced the Scotsman to a pile of mangled
debris as he took his career record against the Scot to six wins in fourteen meetings. Federer was clearly expecting much tougher opposition and resistance than what Murray was able to offer. He said he was also surprised by the amount of errors Murray took
earlier on.
The match promised to be a killer spectacle as the two players were announced with boxing like introductions and rock-show lighting to boot, but somewhere between then and the start of the match Murray’s energy, and apparently his will to win fizzled out.
No fault can be attributed to Federer as he displayed his sheer brilliance in a match that had all the markings of being one of the greatest in the ATP Tour Finals' history; however to everyone’s consternation that was not meant to be. It appeared as if
Murray simply unravelled in front of a 17,000 spectator strong crowd.
Murray had a chance on 0-30 when Federer was leading 5–4, but the Swiss ensured no niceties were dished out as he snuffed the light from Murray’s game with three scorching hot points; the first coming off a brutal smash, the second off a remorseless forehand
winner while the last came out a stupendous volley that left the Scotsman breathless, causing him to smash a forehand wide off court giving Federer the first set of the game.
Luckily for Murray, he still has the chance to reach the semi-finals considering the format of qualification for the event. However, he will have to get over his defeat from Federer quickly and will have to focus on being the undoing of the Swede Robin Soderling.
Meanwhile, the star studded event saw Diego Maradona once again grace the O2 Arena in the match between Federer and Murray. Rafael Nadal will be seen in action on Wednesday against Novak Djokovic after having humbled Andy Roddick in his first match of the
event.
Roger Federer is chasing a record equalling fifth title at the O2 Arena. Despite having scorn poured all over him in 2010, the twenty-nine year old maestro remains the top contender to win the indoor tournament in London. His performances against David Ferrer
and Andy Murray demonstrate his sheer perfection and dazzling skills, and do justice to the claims of those who call him the greatest ever tennis player.
