Why Roy Hodgson deserved the sack and why Kenny Dalglish is the right choice – Part 3
Under Roy, Liverpool have lost 9 of their 20 league games and won only 7 this season. His uninspiring football led to Liverpool exiting the Carling Cup in the most astonishing fashion - their worst exit for over 50 years.
Hodgson was the choice of the previous regime at the club and he along with the then Chief Executive drew up a list of terrible transfer targets. They messed up the club's summer overhaul big time.
No doubt some of the criticism of Hodgson has been daft and over exaggerated, but most of it has been spot on. Hodgson’s stance of being diplomatic when Sir Alex wrongly called http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 a cheat and later linked the player with United was not just
upsetting for the fans but for the player too.
Jose Mourinho has called his players the best in the world, where ever he has been. While at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044 as best in the world in their respective positions.
He then moved to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Javier-Zanetti-c18096 were the three best players in their respective positions.
But Roy, instead of defending his man, and especially when he had done nothing wrong and was criticised by a manager whom Liverpool fans loath, he decided to let it go. This was the beginning of a damaging relationship between him and the fans.
It’s pretty simple, if someone asks how beautiful your wife is, you have to say she is beautiful or else lose her respect. Unfortunately for Roy, he was too awed by Sir Alex Ferguson and still thought as a Fulham manager.
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has said that Roy Hodgson is a ‘great manager’ but one doesn't see him managing any Arsenal side, ever. Will the fans there accept him? Not a chance. Some might argue that it’s absurd to compare Liverpool’s situation to that of Arsenal.
However, Liverpool were doing better than Arsenal under Rafa, especially in terms of grabbing trophies.
There is no argument when people say that things had gone stale under Rafa and it was time for change. But the real mess was probably made when the previous Liverpool regime decided to go ‘English’.
With FIFA rules about home grown players coming into play, the previous regime thought the best idea would be to hire an English manager which would result in more English players at the club. This sounded daft the moment it spread the web. Although, Roy
seemed to be a reasonably safe choice for the transitional period at the club, he was never the right choice.
This become clearer as the season unfolded and then came a point that it became untenable. With the lack of availability of ideal managerial options, a stop gap manager, who will buy sometime for the club until summer to look for a permanent change then,
appeared to be the best possible scenario for the club at that time.
Dalglish seemed the perfect fit for this temporary role. It was during his 14 years at the club as a player and manager that Liverpool played arguable the best football in club's rich history. He won 8 league titles during his time at the club.
During his short tenure at Newcastle, Kenny brought Didi Hamann to the club who was later sold to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Shay-Given-c33284, Gary Speed and Nolberto Solano were some of his other super signings. These three went on to play for the Geordies for
many years to come.
