Of course Russia is interested in holding NATO further from it's borders, and it is one of the reasons of Russia's interest in this region. Another one is the fact that Osetia is divided land and divided nation. One part of Osetia (Northern Osetia) is a region of Russia, and another one (South Osetia) is de jure part of Georgia. Having part of this nation as it's citizens Russia can not close eyes to their constant requests about taking care of southern part of this nation and requests for reunion of nation. But those matters mean nothing in compare with facts of Georgia's genocide and killing of russian peacekeepers during attack on Osetia. Russia just could not ignore such events and leave this aggression without answer even if it wanted to do so. Other reasons just are not nedded.
