  1. If you read the Bible, you'll've noted that Moses led his people around the desert for a generation, because those born into slavery enjoyed the freedom  but hated the responsibility of having to fend for themselves.  Thus, in Russia, there have been many nostalgic pinings for the days when "at least Stalin put bread in the stores" (Stalin is acknowledged to have killed millions of Russians during his iron-fisted reign).  I think with Russia's new wealth, and the coming of age of the post-Soviet generation, we will see a more moderate Russia that will look back on the Putin days and shake their collective head...

  2. if you are so crushed on gorbatchev would you like to have him as PM of Canada? With all he did to Russia would you like him do the same to your country? To Quebec in particular?

Don’t thumb me down – just a silly answer to a silly question!

  3.   Gorbatchev the perfect idiot .

  4. It doesn't have a kind and sympathetic president for the same reason the US doesn't have Ron Paul. Neither the army, nor the huge thieving government apparatus would welcome any positive social change. The government is interested in cultivating flag-waving patriotism and obedience in the same manner as in every other major country.

Besides, they feel that the populace will support their authoritarian aspirations due to the fact that the officially more democracy-oriented government of the 90'ies was effectively occupied by bandits. Even though the current government is largely composed of the same people, they miraculously position themselves as sort of an antithesis to Yeltsin's government.

Most people aren't fond of the US at all because they believe that the international community ruled by the US approved of the p**s-poor economic condition of Russia in the 90'ies. Not to mention the Belgrade bombings. Since the US uses democracy as one of its chief propaganda tools, but often fails to adequately justify its international behaviour, that decreases the popular appeal of liberalism and democracy, and increases the appeal of authoritarian figures.

It has to be noted that Gorbachev is blamed for the said p**s-poor condition as well, even though by the time he became a leader the USSR was already deep in an economic crisis. By the way, Gorbachev made several statements on the Ossetian situation, if you're referring to that. He disapproved of the Georgian assault, and suggested that the international community should cooperate on creating a new peacekeeping system in the region. He also mentioned that Georgia should grant more autonomy to South Ossetia and Abkhazia. He added that he has always believed that Georgia should be a federation.
