  1. Why not?

    Yes and no.


  2. No it doesn't.  After the big bang the universe expanded outward, but its slowing down in its expansion, and in time it will start to contract upon itself, leading to a phenomenon known as the big crunch.  But this event will not be for a very long time.

  3. The prevailing opinion is that it is finite but unbounded.  Going down one dimension, this would be analogous to the surface of the earth.  It has no end, but clearly it is not infinite.  It doesn't have a center, either -- at least not unless you consider its 3-dimensional nature, and then you're not talking about the surface any more.  Some believe the universe is like that, only a dimension higher.  We can't perceive or imagine the fourth dimension into which it is curved.

    I disagree with the claim that it will collapse.  Even with the invention of huge amounts of "dark matter," there still isn't enough mass to cause eventual collapse.
