  1. Maybe because it looks like Queen Elizabeth Eleven? There are people who would think there was a Queen Elizabeth II (the eleventh).

  2. The was the name given at the time of her launching.  The Ships complete name was the Cunard Liner RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (two).

  3. or q***r

  4. QE2 is descriptive and not easily mistaken for QE Eleven.

One time, years ago, Lawrence Welk was reading the cue cards, anouncing a song for his show.  Not thinking of what he was reading, I am sure.  He said "Here's a song from W W eye eye."

If it's written QE2, no one will call it Q E eye eye, will they?

  5. The Ocean Liner called the Queen Elizabeth II is nomenclatured using the Roman numbering system: QEII.

The Newspapers call it the QE2 because the "II" can possibly be mis-read by the Hoi Polloi as "Quell" which means to suppress.

God forbid that we should ever quell the proletarian voice of the Hoi Polloi. Once again, ignorance, by dint of loudness, prevails.

Anecdote: When the brilliant film The Madness Of King George III was screened in America, test audiences complained: " What about Parts 1 and 2?"
