  1. People used oxen because they were much, much stronger than horses and cheeper to buy.  They didn't need as much water and you didn't need as many to pull a wagon, unlike horses, with which you needed many.  Also if one died, they had more to butcher than a horse.

  3. They were easy to get and they were stronger. Also, because they were so big when they grew old the people would kill them for meat, so it overall efficient.
