Why Voltage is always in multiples of 11, Like 110v,220v, 11KV,33KV etc.?

  1. i wondered once..and it seems like a standard, either American or British,, but let me tell u that other countries are following different rates,,

    yes the State got this 110 single phase,,, others got 240  S.P or 415  V Three phase,, in my country we generate at 21kV ( the generator voltage rate ) then we step it up to 300 KV then step down to 132 kV then to 11 kV or 33 kV then to 415 V.,

    so 300kV  has nothing to do with this multiples..so to my little knowledge its standard only to get a uniform voltage around the world.


  2. The whole thing started with Edison, who was trying to pick an operating voltage for his new light bulbs. Too high and the bulbs were more difficult to make. Too low and he had more distribution losses. He compromised on 100 volts, then allowed 10 volts for line drops, and got 110 volts. Everything else is a multiple of that.

  3. It isn't necessarily, but having integer multiples of voltage for line levels is convenient for step down transformer design.  Remember that 208v is another common voltage encountered in commercial wiring.
