    z = f(x,y); where z depends on x and y, which are two independent variables.  Suppose that function looks like z^2 = x^2 + y^2; still x and y are two independent variables, and z is the dependent one.

    What's the specific equation?  The Pythagorean equation where z is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose sides are x and y.  No big deal...in fact, we can actually write way more than two independent variables in a single equation.
