  1. Probably because right now, the US isn't first by gold medal count.  So if it's ranked by medal count, the US is first. NBC is doing it by number of medals too...haha.

  2. The  official IOC medal table is organized by gold medals first.  The reason America does it this way is we will finish with the most medals but not the most gold.  It is quite simple but idiotic reasoning.  Winning is always most important.

Silver and broze still count as they are used to break ties with nations with the same amount of gold so saying they don't count is crazy.

Wikipedia is following the offical IOC table.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Summer...

Look at the logic while the Americans whine and complain to no avail because winning is most important.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:2008_S...

    Best part of Wikipedia arguement

    Gold Ordered:

IOC, BBC (UK), Le Monde (France), Der Spiegel (Germany), China Daily, Daily Globe (Canada), La gazzetta dello sport (Italy), Marca (Spain), Le soir (Belgium), The Australian, Yomiuri Shimbun (Japan), The Chosun Ilbo (South Korea), El Norte (Mexico) (edit: added many leading world newspapers, which means pretty much most of the world is counting this way)

    Total Ordered:

NBC, ESPN, Yahoo Sports, NYTimes, CNN/SI (which means USA only...)

here is a story I found about the spin on the tables

  3. So America shows up first. Of course.

  4. i know it makes USA look pathetic in the face of defeat. what's worse is that some americans actually believe that they are still number one. the US media could have faced this honorably by reporting the truth. for all we know the USA will still win this one by surpassing china in terms of gold medals won. but pls, media, (that includes yahoo) be fair and objective.

  5. Because silver and bronze medals obviously also count. If they didn't count, we wouldn't give them out.

    Dumb question.

(The US is obviously not losing, lol. Ridiculous.)

  6. Who cares? I thought you people only care about the sport. What does it matter who comes in first.

Don't be so bitter. The USA is not losing.

And we are number one, idiots.

  7. Because it's the only way to make it look like the USA performed best.
