I live in Saudi Arabia. I've never seen this sort of obnoxious stuff.

Besides, it seems that u r simply making this up. In Saudi Arabia, the no. of guys is 1/3rd as compared to that of girls. So, u can see who is in 'demand'. I don't see how this story of yours can be true.

I just heard that the man gives money as mahr to daughter and she buys the thing she wants for marriage

There is nothing wrong in it ,Just according to islam.

No burden on bride's father

Not like otherwise where poor brids father has to arrange every thing  for marriage .and give a lot of things to bridegroom.

This is without a doubt arranged marriage and in arranged marriages love is not the main factor but others are such as money, family name, tribes name ect.
