Question:

Why a rodent as a pet?

I don't want to sound like I hate rodents but why would want to have them as pets?

Personally I haven't had good expriences with mice or rats. They are not friendly and and became frantic everytime I tried to become passionate and friendly to them. I do know how to care for them I owned tons of different animals over a span of ten years.

I feel sorry for mice because their at the bottom of the food chain and my savannah monitor love to eat them.

On the other hand I do see mice and rats who have very unique fur/coloring patterns.

I would like to own a hampster but that seems like a kids pet, it doesn't seem very manly.

I don't want to sound like I have no respect for rodents because I am very friendly to animals even the ones who don't like me lmao.

But please explain why to me why you love your precious rodents so much? Maybe I will gain a better understanding of these interesting animals

  1. Rat's and mice are great pets. They are fun, easy to care for, inexpensive, and SMART! You can train a rat to do all kinds of things. Rat's and mice, in my experience anyway, are less likely to bite than some other rodents. But if you had bad experiences with them , ask yourself why. Did you buy and use them as food? Did you smell like something that wants to eat them when you handled them (dog, cat, ferret, savannah monitor) ? Did you just reach in and grab them without letting them get used to you? Think about this, you are the size of a mouse, something the size of a human reaches in to your cage smelling like a monitor, and grabs you. Would you panic?

  2. i love my gerbil because i spent so much time with  him and got to know him. if you spend time with them you will make a special bond. people also just love to hold them and watch them play. their nature is very facinating in my opinion.

  3. 1 cheap 2easy to take care of

  4. I love my hamster, Cinnamon, and I really reccomend that you et one too, no matter what. She is sweet and friendly, she likes riding on my shoulder, she eats out of my hand, and in short, Cinnamon is the best of the best!!!

Who cares if it's kind of a kid's pet? It's the nicest pet you can get!

  5. 1.If cared for properly over a short time they can become very loyal, especially rats.

    2.they are cheap as pets.

    3. They are great first pets for kids.

    4.they are cute.

    5.they are fun to watch.

6.they can be educational in some ways, like to teach you about behavior habits.

    7.they are low maintenance.

    8. they do not bite unless provoked

    9.They bond with you easily.

10.they make great pets for people who don't have lots of space...

I have 2 guinea pigs, and i used to have 13 mice, i plan on getting a few more soon

  6. Well, most rodents are cute, like the hamster. Also, they are fun to watch, cheap, and I love my hamster because of his personallity. He is really sweet and never bites. Also he likes to cuddle up next to my neck and fall asleep. I just love it.

  7. I myself have 2 pet rats.

The best domestic pets are Dumbo Ear rats or Fancy rats.

My rats love to climb up on me and l**k my face, and cuddle and sleep with me.

It all depends on the pet store, really.

I usually like the runt of the litter. They are younger and have more time to get used to you.

Males are laid back and like to sleep and cuddle.

Females like to run and play but also cuddle and sleep with you too.

  9. Most rodents have great personalities packed into little tiny packages.

  10. I think rodents are good pets b/c i have 2 hamsters and peoplebuy them b/c of how tiny and cute they are.

if they try to bite you, just let them gert used to their cage, the let them sniff your hand and when theyre comfortable w/ you, pik them up or try.

sometimes rodents can stink, but you just have to clean their cages every week or 2 weeks.

also you have to change their water once  a week and feed them about a tbl. sp. a day of food not the whole bowl full.

importantly make sure they have a steady wheel to run on or a ball to run in or both. its funny watching them run, plus they wont get fat.

This is just what i think about my hamsters, b/c i luv them but im not the boss of your life.

and who cares if you dont look "manly" with a hamster? if yur friiends make fun of you, are they really a real definition of friends?

  11. Yes, mice and rats are inexpensive. One nearby pet shop that sells rats for snake food will give them to you if you don't have a snake. Not all rodents are cheap though. My granddaughter breeds and raises sugar gliders (tiny flying squirrel like marsupials) She sell them for several hundred dollars each.

  12. I've had guinea pigs (technically not rodents- they're in the cavy family).  I like them because:

    - friendly

    - cute

    - interesting to watch

    - caged

    - easy to take care of

    - not slimy/scaly

    - make noise

    - I'm allergic to cats

    - my mom is allergic to dogs

If you want a more macho small animal, you could try

    - ferret (don't recommend them due to smell and mischievousness)

    - chinchilla (expensive)

    - rat

    - prairie dog (not very friendly, not really meant to be a pet, not legal everywhere)

  13. I have a guinea pig as a pet, and I love her.

    She's very cute.

She hardly bites at all (unless you really do something to terrify her)

She's easy to take care of.

She wasn't expensive and is relatively inexpensive to keep.

    She's cute.

She's company if I'm alone, and I like to just sit around and hold her while watching tv.

  14. They are cheaper then most animals to keep,

They don't require a lot of work,

And they are usually good with children.

  15. well, its one of the only ways left to catch the elusive rotavirus...

so, I would have to say that they are NOT good for children or especially NOT for pregnant women

they are cheap though...and you probably aren't as sad if they die as compared to a dog or cat

  16. -Pretty cheap

    -e-z to care for

    -fun to watch

    -lots of personilitys

    -sizes

    -colors

    -breeds

    -most are friendly

    -cool

  17. My kids wanted pets and we live in an apartment.  Plus they're really cute and cuddly.  Now I wish I had room for more.

  18. I like animals in general.  Rodents have the advantage of being small and easy to maintain.  Pet rats are generally very friendly, though your view may be skewed if you have only dealt with feeders.  Breeders of feeder rats can be careless about their temperament.  Like anybody, rodents do have inborn personalities, and breeders should consider this.

Mice are pretty and acrobatic.  Hamsters I don't appreciate as much, but then many people do.  As rodents go, I prefer rats, but I like all of them.

Now I have a juvenile wild rat (rattus rattus) that my cat brought me unharmed, and am trying to tame him.  Why am I doing that?  He has the genetic wild temperament, and he bites!  I guess I'm jaded with the petstore rats and mice.  I want a challenge.  Every day I take him out and hold him securely while trying not to get bitten.  Yesterday I fed him jam while I was holding him.  The threatened to bite the spoon, but then started l*****g the jam; not bad!

I could always give him back to the cat if he doesn't learn to love me!  I told him I saved his life, but too bad, he doesn't understand English.

Do you think a wild rat would be a manly pet?

I like Savannah monitors too.  I used to have Chinese water dragons, years ago.

  19. They are cheap.

They can be hand reared and become tamed very easily.

They are intelligent enough to be very entertaining.

They are hardier than most other exotics like some reptiles and birds.

They can be handled quite a bit with no adverse effects.

I moved to a smaller place w/o a yard and need a furry friend- had to let my dogs stay back with parents, and got a guinea pig. He IS like a little dog now, and at a whopping 3lbs, about the same size as a teacup chi! :)
