    The rate of oscillation of a pendulum is dependent only on the length, so with the proper length the pendulum can be adjusted to a rate of exactly one per second, or 1 per two seconds, or some other even multiple of one second.

    The major error is in the expansion or contraction with temperature of the metal rod holding the weight, and this can be corrected.

    The motion of the pendulum can be used to hit a ratchet to advance a gear, and via other gears, turn the minute and hour hand.

    A hanging weight that uses it's potential energy can be used to keep the pendulum swinging and compensate for friction losses.
