Eyewitnesses of atomic blasts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki describe seeing people after the explosion with no eyes, melted eyes or with eyes just popped out and hanging on their faces. Why do eyes behave this way?

  1. The eye contains a lens with it's focal point

    in an aqueous liquid.

Close enough to the flash that liquid might be

    caused to 'flash' into steam.

Not exactly dinner table conversation, but you asked.

  2. Where did you get this information?

If the injury is severe enough to burn out the eyes, the face is long gone. Since the heat is not limited to the face, so is the victim.  I would ask for confirmatory photographs.

Addendum-- Near the epicenter of an atomic blast, there is a lot more damage than just the eyes- Matter of fact, many of the victims were vaporized, and some left a "shadow" on a wall as the only evidence someone was there.  Again, ask for proof.

  3. This is because the eyes are very sensitive to the radiation and the intense heat from looking at the blast must heat the temperature of the eyes to a point in which they either liquify, or are warped.
