  1. for the same reason that they do on any public transport in any city.  I used to have an hour's commute each direction in the UK and got through dozens of books each year.

  2. Both of them are right as to they want to past their time away but making use of it.  This is seldom see in Hong Kong and Tokyo, but its common is Singapore and Taipei, where there are more space for sitting and standing and to past time well.

  3. interesting question. having lived in singapore all my life, i've never thought about that.

but in my case, i do that to pass time and to make myself feel less awkward. singaporeans are generally more withdrawn, and it feels weird to be there not doing anything. don't ask me why. it's just part of the singapore style i guess.

  4. We hate to be idle at any time. Life in Singapore is too fast-paced so every second needs to be utilised to the max.

  5. to kill time...

oh come on, they are doing so to distract themselves from stares bout giving up seats to those who are really in need..

  6. because its boring in the mrt? and there is nothing to do other than occupying ourselves

  7. Maybe it is too quiet.

  8. to kill time..

its boring especially when you're alone with no one to talk to..

just have to stare at an empty space??

    weird.

i do that too when i was in singapore..

and i still do that now that im in australia..

    it's pretty common.
