You are better off working for a variety of clients - otherwise it isn't challenging or interesting any more and you get a lot more done (which you can charge for).  

I'd hate to be the in house geek.  There's nobody else who you can bounce ideas off - mostly they are treated pretty badly by management who have no idea how complex some things are.  The solution itself might be simple but the process of finding and correcting the fault is anything but.  People don't appreciate that.    

You are going to have to get used to employing IT Consultants.
