1. It has historically been a way of showing watches and clocks in advertising as usually the brand name for the watch us written halfway between the 12 and centre point of the face. Having the hands at 10:10 frames the logo in a way pleasing to the eye.

  2. They either show ten past 10 or ten to 2.

This is historic. Back in the days when all clocks were analogue (they had hands), clock shops would display all their clocks in this manner. This is because putting the hands in the 10:10 or 1:50 positions keeps the clock mechanism balanced. Keeping the hands stationary in any other position for a long period of time can damage the workings of the clock.

This tradition has carried on to digital displays, for no other reason than it IS tradition!

  3. because the industry thinks it looks better being more symmetrical, and balanced.and more eye catching.

  4. They always do that, so that the hands look like a smiley face! True.

  5. Because that time displays the dial and writing on it.

  6. It looks a bit like a smile, and is supposed to be the most attractive setting.

Some pedants (Like James Randi) point out that in reality the hour hand would be one sixth of the way between ten and eleven if that really was the time - many photos are doctored to even out the 'smile'!
