well, if you mean why do so many people use them, because it's legal.  i smoke and drink (nothing else): the smoking because it's an excuse to go outside for 5 minutes and get away from work, the drink because it helps to wind down, or celebrate with family and friends.  before fascism in this country, smoking used to be a very nice way to meet people, and have a serious discussion.  ahhh, there's still nothing like coffee and a cigarette in the morning!  in general, i've noticed that americans like a cure-all, something cheap and readily available
