Why am I allergic to cats?

Why am I allergic to cats? I don't want to be, I love all animals, but I can't work out why or how a person in general can be 'allergic' to a specific animal.

I have a dog and I love petting him and cuddling him, I have no allergy to him whatsoever. However, one touch of a cat and I can really feel a reaction coming on. Chest tightening, rash, eyes itching, etc. I got scratched by a cat once when I was younger and the simple claw scratch inflamed and went white.

I am asthmatic and also suffer from hay-fever.

I wonder what exactly (scientifically if possible) makes me allergic to cats... is it similar to hay-fever? Is there some sort of airborne allergen that ONLY cats emit? I don't know...

  1. An allergy is the result of a person's overactive  immune system reacting  to harmless things. This is allergens. your body thinks the allergen is an invader and makes antibodies to attack it.People who have allergies have an antibody called Immunoglobulim E or IgE. When allergen first contact the body of a person with allergies, allergen specfic IgE antibodies are produced. Each type of IgE has a speccific "Radar" for one type allergen only. That's why some people are allergic to cats only. (they have only the IgE antibodies specific to cats)..........
