Why am I diverted to yahoo search results when I type in a web address in the correct field?

I am not typing a web address in the search field, but in the correct addresss field. For instance, I'll try to type in 'www.mail.yahoo.com' and then a page comes up with search results, and the first link is of course, Yahoo! mail. This has only happened after I bought a new HP laptop in August.

if the URL isn't exactly correct, the page will likely not exist. When this happens, internet explorer will "help" you by taking you to a search page.

This can be turned off in the internet options (I always turn it off as I find it really annoying)
