Question:

Why am I gaining weight so quickly?

I'm 33 weeks today and I'm gaining weight really rapidly. I haven't done anything differently from the beginning of my pregnancy till now, so why am I gaining so much so quickly? I've gained about 6 pounds in 3 days. I don't understand. I still walk, and I don't over eat. Why is this happening?? I thought I was "supposed" to gain a pound a week. It's just really upsetting me.

I didn't gain hardly any at all in my first and second trimesters, but I was still gaining enough. This rapid weight gain is really starting to worry me. I'll be asking my doctor about it next week but until then... any advice or suggestions as to what might be going on??

  1. I don't think it's you gaining the weight, I think it's your baby that is putting it on.

  2. I did the same thing and i have no idea why! Im 39 weeks now and ive gained 41 pounds :( i dont eat any junk food really and i make sure when i do eat something its healthy. My one craving is cinnamon toast waffles which dont even have that many calories lol You might want to have your doctor check you for diabetes because rapid weight gain is one of the signs. Goodluck!

  3. I am going to second what Carter's Mommy said.  You really do need to call the doctor's office and let them know TODAY.  I have had two different doctors (moved in middle of pregnancy) and they both told me that if I ever had sudden weight gain of 2lbs or more in less than a week I needed to call right away.  The only thing that would make you gain that much weight in that short period of time is either water weight which is not a good sign if you body is storing that much water or it could be that your body is not digesting the food properly which is also a sign that something is wrong.

  4. Not that I want to worry you but rapid weight gain can be a sign of pre-eclampsia.

    I'm sure you're fine and it's just your baby growing but it might be worth a quick visit to your midwife for a check up.

  5. Don't wait until next week.  Call now.  It could be many things.  Maybe gestational diabetes, or it could be a sign of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension or Preeclampsia.  Those two have symptoms of rapid weight gain you are supposed to report gaining more then 5lbs in one week.  6 lbs in the three days is not normal.  It could be, but you need to call today.  How is your blood pressure?  Are you swelling anywhere?  Are you dizzy?  Have spotted vision?  Any headaches that will not go away?  Have answers ready when you call but really you need to call now.

    EDIT: yes of course the baby grows rapidly the last trimester, but NOT 6lbs in three days.  Have any of you heard of an unborn baby growing 6lbs in 3 days?

    Symptoms

    Symptoms of preeclampsia can include:

    Headaches

    Swelling of the hands and face (edema)

    Weight gain

    More than 2 pounds per week

    Sudden weight gain over 1 - 2 days

  6. maybe its just a growth spurt for your little one.. I gained4lbs in 1week the laste 4 weeks of my pregnancy. it was because my hubby was coming home from iraq for his emergency leave. are you happy about something? sad about something? both can make you gain weight rapidly. You will be just fine

  7. the last few weeks of your pregnancy you will average a pound a week and if you were underweight for most of your pregnancy you will gain much more.. it is your baby growing.

  8. The extra weight you gain during pregnancy provides nourishment to your developing baby and is also stored for breastfeeding your baby after delivery.

        *   Baby = 7-8 pounds

        * Placenta = 1-2 pounds

        * Amniotic fluid = 2 pounds

        * Uterus = 2 pounds

        * Maternal breast tissue = 2 pounds

        * Maternal blood = 4 pounds

        * Fluids in maternal tissue = 4 pounds

        * Maternal fat and nutrient stores = 7 pounds

    Approximately 1-2 pounds per week in the third trimester

    Hope this helps

  9. towards the end of pregnancy is when the baby grows the most so im sure thats all it is =) i wouldnt worry too much about it just keep doing what your doing!
