Question:

Why am I having trouble pumping?

My son is 8 months old and I have breastfed the entire time except of course when I am at work and have to pump. I have had a lot of success with pumping up until a couple of weeks ago. I went from pumping approx 6 oz at a time to barely getting 2 oz. He is not having any trouble with eating it is only when I pump. I use the Avent Isis manual pump and thought maybe I needed to replace some of the parts so I bought a whole new pump and still no change. Any thoughts as to what has happened and what I can do would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I have been told that pumping either with a breast pump or even by hand is a lot easier during a hot shower then trying to do it without the hot water. I do not have my little boy yet, but i have been given that advice, hope it helps.

  2. Are you pumping/feeding at the same intervals (i.e. every 3 hours)?  Stay on a regular schedule if you can (more pumping or feeding = more milk production).

  3. It happens with pumping. I don't know exactly why but I would contact your la leche league and have them help you with it. They are AWESOME!

  4. Are you more stressed than usual lately? Sometimes that interferes with the 'let down' reflex. You can try taking Fenugreek  3 times a day with your meals(obtained from a vitamin or organics store). You can also try Mother's Milk tea as well. Good luck!
