  1. Roses like the sun and to be fed. A good food is a systemic rose food every 4 to 6 weeks, this will keep them fed and help keep pest problems to a min. When trimming off old blooms, go down on the stem to the first sturdy area on the stem with 5 leaves on it, cut at an angle just above the 5 leaf group. When watering roses try not to get the foliage wet, this causes problems if they stay wet to long. All the above works for potted or planted roses and a little mulch around the roots will help keep the soil moist. When fertilizing don't put fertilizer up next to the trunk...depending on the size of the rose bush come out  close to the drip line.Bayer makes a good systemic fertilizer, use it on all you flowers and you will see a differance.Use a good soil mix when transplanting roses and dont bury the grafted area, using bone meal is a plus too.

  2. Many years ago I worked at a nursery that specialized in growing roses. We fertilized the rose gardens about once a month  in the growing season and we rotated the fertilize using three different watered in fertilizers. We also limed them with dolomite lime a couple of times during the growing season.Living in the south where there are many bugs, we sprayed once a week also. We had beautiful roses but it was constant work.
