Question:

Why am I stuck as a middle?

Ok, I have been put as a middle hitter for three straight years, and I am sick of it. I'm in high school at the JV level. I'm 5 foot 10 and I have a 29 and a half inch vertical. I hit like an outside, and block like a middle. My teammate is 6 foot 2 and my coach keeps putting him as an outside hitter. I can jump higher than he can and I can hit better than he can. Why am I stuck as a middle?

  1. Ahh I play middle hitter too!! lol I personally like it because I love to block and to hit middle plus I'm the tallest person on my team

I think the reason that your coach has you playing middle is basically because you can jump higher. Usually to play middle you have to be able to jump at certain angles to hit the ball down.

Even if the other boy on the team is taller, because he can't jump as high  your coach probably wants him to play outside and he probably wants you in the middle to block since you can jump high.

I would take it as a compliment that your coach has you playing middle because it means that he trusts you with the blocking and being able to hit A balls which are a lot harder to hit because they're a lot lower.

If it bothers you though, try talking to your coach about it. When you do hitting lines hit outside while waiting to hit middle.

    Good luck : )

  2. i would have to say your coach doesnt know much or he thinks your more of an asset in the middle. it makes more sense to have a 6'2 middle then a 5'10 middle. I think he doesnt know what he is doing.

  3. First of all, I have to tell you that not all players can play middle... only the best.

I was a middle. Although I don't want to say I could have been the best outside hitter on my team, I am pretty sure I was the best all around and I am still able to play all positions after 20+ years of playing.

So for the best interest of your team, you need at least two best middle to run all kinds of plays, in order to get blockers off your OH and get your team more kills. Some OHs could hit a "2" in the middle, but you just don't want to watch how they were hitting... awful. They can hardly do "1", and they don't know how to jump for a slide. Some OHs could be taller than you but they are not quick enough to run the middle, and may not be able to move left and right quickly enough to form the double-block.

After all, you should be very proud of yourself playing middle for three straight years.
