As you all know im working on a 85hp mercury thunderbolt from the 70's, when i got it home i check for spark which i had on all four plugs, then i cleaned the carbs, fuell lines, checked my starter motor and rewired some of the wires on the wiring-harnis.

when i put everything back together and connected it to the battery, the "Chock" unit started to short a little, so i disconnected it, the engine cranks but im getting no spark, what mistakes may i have done, and how can i start trouble shooting the problem,

thanks again

  1. Because it's from the 70s and for all intents and purposes, it shouldn't even still be running, that's why.

  2. Sounds like you may have wired something incorrectly and caused a short, assuming it did not short out when you first hooked up the battery to check for spark. Get a manual or check with your local marina and see if they will give you a copy of the wiring diagram. What do you mean by a "chock " unit? Do you mean the electric choke? It`s just a solenoid that is activated by energizing the unit and should not short out unless it has a defect. May have damaged something in the control unit. There used to be a small fuse box on some of those units on top of the power head. You still need the schematics for your wiring in order to trouble shoot. By the way the other guy is a nob . I still use my 67 Chrysler boat and  Evinrude and my 69 Johnson still runs great. And I use a 58 Scott 12 hp for trolling. He`s probably jelous cause he doesn`t have a boat. Or has too much money and not enough brains.
