i just found out i have bad gumdisease and abcess on my gum the dentist put me on amoxicilin 875 mil twice a day and some kind of mouth wash chloridimin something like that will this help the gum disease and why is the miligram so high thanks

  1. Yes it's an antibiotic to get rid of the gum disease.  It's a high dosage because like you said , you have a REAL BAD GUM DISEASE.Keep using it till it's all gone. Unless you want to lose all your teeth.

    You might want to have yourself checked for diabetes while you're at it.

Like the other person said, you need to take the antibiotics as prescribed until they are gone.  875mg 2x/day is a normal dosage.  We put patients on 500mg 4x/day normally, so that is 2000 mg/day vs the 1750 mg/day you are taking.  Your dentist probably just asked for a higher amount so you only have to take it twice instead of 4x/day.

    If the antibiotic dosage is not high enough to combat the infection, it will be ineffective and not do its job.

    The mouthrinse is probably chlorhexidine, which is also an antibacterial.  That is a very good product to use even after the amoxicillin is done and you don't have any active infections.
