Why americans can read but cannot comprehend?

im not saying americans are dumb r stupid im just asking because i read an article in school and i wanted to know what you all thought,,,,thanks anyways i really appreciate it ")

It's not true that NO Americans can't comprehend (anything).

But your educational system is really horrible. Those who design it try to tak almost all of the THINKING out of it.

Thus, most students don't learn how to intellectually engage with material that doesn't spoon-feed them.

I think studies have shown that the average American's attention span has decreased. You should google it if you want to get more in-depth info. I think there are probably a few factors: the amount of time Americans spend watching TV (which, due to commercials, can condition people to pay attention for 10 minute or so blocks of time), the enormous media stimulus that most of us are subjected too which forces us to block out more, the decreased amount of time people actually spend reading, the high value placed on multi-tasking (which is shown to be detrimental to memory). I think these may be some of the reasons why our attention span has decreased, which, I would guess, is the reason why Americans often read without understanding.

That is what we American's call an over-generalization.

Because school doesn't teach us how to think - it teaches us how to conform, and how to nod our heads and say "yes" to everything we hear.  It teaches us to accept the things that we are told as fact.

But don't be ethnocentric - I've met a lot of people who would fit that bill from other countries as well, just like there are some Americans who can think, too.
