When I connect to public networks occasionally I get a request from random computers on the network to access my media files. How and why is this happening? Also Can I set my computer up to always deny these requests so I don't even see the popup?

  1. That's a "feature" from Microsoft on Media Player 11.  It shares your music and it lets you view others' shared music.

    Here's MS's info:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows...

Try this to disable media sharing...open Media Player and follow this (I know it says turn on but the last step you select "enable" or "disable")

    Q.  How do I turn on media sharing?

    A.  1.

Click the arrow below the Library tab, and then click Media Sharing.

    2.

In the Media Sharing dialog box, select the Share my media to check box.

    3.

In the list of devices below the Share my media to check box, select a device.

    4.

    Do one of the following:

    • If you want to share your media with the computer or device you have selected, click Allow.

    • If you don't want to share your media with the computer or device you have selected, click Deny.

  2. on a public network other people on that network can view your files. If you have music or videos on your computer, they other people are probably trying to download them somehow.

Get a pop up blocker and that should stop you from getting those messages.
