Why and how to backwash a pool filter?

I am a new pool owner (an intex above ground), and I read somewhere that I need to backwash my fliter. What is the purpose of that, and how the heck do I do it? Will cleaning the filter do the same thing or does it have to be backwashed? Thanks!

  1. I own a pool business so I know what I'm talking about. You can only backwash sand filters and I'm 95% positive you have a cartridge filter. So you can't backwash. No worries though, you can take the filter out and hose it off. Or for better results soak it in a filter cleaner. Soaking it once a season should be plenty.

  2. Just to clear a few things up. Yes you probably have a cartridge filter with an intex AG pool. You backwash sand and most DE filters. To HallBall- you shouldnt backwash 3 times a week. Sand filters work better slightly dirty. Watch your pressure gauge and when it goes up 10-15psi higher than normal then backwash. IF by chance you do have a sand filter do what Hall said. It is imperative you backwash these filters. If you do not it will restrict flow and cause the water to get cloudy.

  3. well, the purpose is to clean out the filter, basically.

    It is really easy.

    1. Turn off the pump

    2. Turn handle to backwash

    3. Turn on pump

    4. watch the little thing till the water looks clear(takes about 30 seconds)

    5. turn off pump

    6. turn handle to filter

    7. turn on pump

Then your done. Your pool, might be different, but this is how my pool is.

I recommend doing a backwash at least 3 times a week, and after every time you vaccum.

    Have fun in your pool
