Question:

Why and how would a wind turbine in the ocean harm marine life?

Wouldn't it's moving parts be high above the water? High enough not to affect flying fish? Is there something at the bottom that could harm marine life - or something about the pole itself? Up until now, I was only thinking about what lives Below the water. Is the possible danger to marine birds? (I didn't think of them when I started this question!)

  1. Wales could run into it.

  2. They're also several miles out at sea - the birdstrike problem is really non-existent.

  3. "A" wind turbine? They are usually installed in groups. Think of them as small artificial reefs. Sea-life grows on them; they attract fish; the fish attract fishermen. I recall fishing oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. You had to get out while it was still dark in order to get a decent spot. The only harm I envision ight come from over-fishing.

  4. Turbines over the ocean still require a foundation into the ocean floor...and require a collection system to collect energy and bring it to land.  Construction of both of those will disrubt habitats of some marine life initially.  There is probably also some danger associated with fuel/oil of boats that need to access the areas for construction and maintenance.  I would, however, imagine that the impact of the turbines once up and running would be rather minimal.  Plus, I believe floating foundations are in research, which if plausible, would even further reduce the impact.  The threat to birds from any wind turbine is not nearly as high as it used to be.  Research has shown that household cats are more of a danger to birds than wind turbines.
