  1. This tradition comes from the Greek idea that in order to get to heaven you need to cross the river Styx.  The coins are used to pay the boatman to get you across the river into heaven.

  2. I read about an old superstition that says that if you drop a coin on the gravestone and make a wish, the dead person can help (intercede for) you.

As someone else mentioned, the ancient Greeks usually buried their dead with coins inside the mouths because they believed the dead must pay the Oarman to cross the River Styx.

By the way, coins were put on they eyes of the dead to prevent their eyes opeing during rigor mortis (very spooky when a dead person is staring at you)!

  3. That is new news to me.They use to put nickels on the eyes of the dead soldiers.I guess you have heard the statement he would steal the nickels off a dead mans eyes.<<<<<<<<<<<

  4. sorry, idk
