  1. after duk koo kim died in the ring after a fight with ray mancini, even though it was a WBA title fight, the WBC shortened their bouts to 12 in '82./'83.

in 1987, after mike tyson unified the heavyweight titles, the WBA and shortly after the IBF as well, also shortened their fights to 12, and all state athletic commissions and  boxing boards followed suit.

when the WBO came into being in '88, and all subsequent organizations as well, they all started with 12 round title fights.

it has also been suggested that the tv networks were behind the decision so they could fit title fights into their 1 hour slot....if that's the case, then the fact that world title fights are not really shown on network tv anymore (in the u s anyway), some think we should go back to 15 rounders.

  2. I think it was in 1982 when Boom Boom Mancini killed the Korean guy, Duk Koo Kim, that WBC boxing went from 15 rounds down to 12 rounds.  The other major boxing promotions didn't adopt the 12 rounds until much later.

  3. because of primetime TV viewership. nobody wants to watch a boring 12 round fight much more a 15 rounder. with the proliferation of different exciting sports on TV, NBA, NFL, UFC, NHL they had to adjust their time slot so as not to bore the viewers.

it also has to do with the humane side of the sport but it's more of the time management.

  4. Doo Koo Kim's death after the Mancini fight prompted boxing authorities to make the change.  When they evaluated the issue, they found that most serious injuries - and the deaths that had occurred - happened between rounds 12 to 15.

  5. Early 80's after Boom Boom Mancini beat Doo Koo Kim to death in the ring.

  6. It was deemed that 15 rounds was to long for the boxers to intelligently defend themselves.  They said after the first 12 rounds the boxer is so tired that the punches do much more permanent damage.  All four of the sanctioning bodies didnt conver to 12 rounds till the late 80's
