  1. back in 1952 it only took 8 wins to win the cup since an octopus has 8 legs now it takes 16 wins to win the cup that's why they throw an octopus on to the ice

let go red wings and i hope the lakers beat the c**p out of the Celtics because they beat my pistons

    lets go red wings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. i'm not a hockey fan and i've never heard of that.  i guess u learn something new everyday

  3. Please stop asking this!

  4. its just something thats done.

its been happening for a long time.

i think they made it illegal now though? not 100% sure on that one.

  5. Back in the 1952 playoffs is when it started.  Since an octopus has 8 legs and back in the 1950's only 8 wins were necessary to win the Stanley Cup, this is how it started when a local fish store owner threw one on the ice.  The Red Wings went on to sweep both opponents, winning 8 straight games and the Stanley Cup.  Since then, the tradition has continued even though 16 wins are necessary to win now.  The Octopus has become a symbol of the Red Wing's playoff dominance.

    Go Red Wings!!!

    Gary Bettman sucks!!!

  6. It started two years after hockey began.  it always has
