  1. A mare is a horse.  It's the species which is being used as the comparison, not the s*x of that species.  Not all animals are like humans, where the male is generally bigger.

The term horsepower was coined by James Watt, a Scotsman, and father of the steam engine, who used it as a common reference point by which to persuade mill owners to switch from horses to steam engines for use in their mines.  He decided that if he could show that it was cheaper to use his engine than buy a horse and all the feed and care which goes with it, then he stood a chance of selling the engines, hence the term Horse Power.

  2. Electric motors, diesal engines, petrl engines  are still sold by their horse power. 746 watts is a horse power of mechanical energy.

  3. Mare is a female horse.

More interesting is difference between metric horse & English horse.

Metric is capable of 75 m∙kgf energy production per second.

    English:  550 ft∙lb per second.

After applying conversion factors, English horse is 1.4% stronger.
