Why are AFL teams scoring so much this year??

I know the connotation of the word "scoring so much" but lets keep it clean guys/gals.

Except Syd v St in the first round - the first 2 and a half rounds have yield scores 30-40 goals per game.

I don't think the defence is any worse than last year. I think the factors are:

1) Playing on at all cost

2) More active interchange which means there's more fresh legs

3) Everyone's copying Geelong

  1. The flood is over, everybody realises that to win you have to score so they've started to attack than defend which is great for footy, I enjoyed the Carlton v Essendon game because of the high scoring, hope it continues.

  2. bc ur g*y

  3. it has a lot to do with kicking goals

  4. game has got much faster, with all the interchanges

  5. i think its because there are all these rules in that make it so easy for the forwards, it is almost impossible to be a defender.

you cant punch (the ball) above their shoulders because if you touch them on the shoulder on the way down, thats a free.

you cant chop the arms, thats a free

you cant "tunnel", thats a free

the game is built for forwards

but the other reason it is a running game like geelong. this can be seen by more interchanges than ever, playing on, as you said, and also less position play (eg. man-on-man) because of flooding.

  6. Basically no reasons at all it just the players and coaches are  better then the nfc it's that simple.

  7. I wonder if it's that a lot of talented players seem to be playing over the whole ground - eg last night Essendon's new defence whiz Paddy Ryder ended up at centre half forward a couple of times!

Also the teams Essendon has played, especially Geelong, have so many big fellas who can belt the ball accurately 70 metres and so we have more long bombs - what would get you nine points in the NAB. Carlton used Fev, Judd and one or two others to do that last night. Boy does Essendon miss our specialist in that, Scotty Lucas!

  8. bc your off tap ,keep your[ c o c k ]clean cheesey

  9. its more offense then strategy which is why the nfl is better

  10. Fresh legs on both sides shouldn't matter.

I think a few years ago you had Sydney, Brisbane, Footasgray all with very negative defensive flooding tactics and other teams tried to copy them.

Geelong principally but a few other clubs as well perfected the way around this.  They made the ball move faster than the legs - hence the play on at all costs.

I've timed a few of Geelong's attacks with a stop watch and the best I've seen is 6.3 seconds from Scarlett 20 yards out to a shot on goal from 40 yards.  That's about 130 yards on the G.  So the defenders can't flood back that fast.  Even the midfield can't get back that fast, let alone the half forwards.

Footy's cyclical in tactics and once someone learns to stop the Geelong style attack then that will be the fashion.  That might be by blocking up the corridor or staying back the whole game and letting the Cats have their back line to themselves - i.e five loose defenders.  But then you have to score goals.

Of course, easier said than done!
