Why are Americans so thick?

My local pub has added some huge steaks to their menu, they are at least 2"(51mm) thick, they have called them America steaks and come with a bucket of fries and onion rings. They are delicous but very hard to stomach, whatever happened to the saying "Less is more"!!!

I think it's funny that I'm American and I don't even know a satisfying answer to your question. Perhaps it's due to the fact I'm vegetarian. I think it has got to do with money, though. Consider this: More meat to sell > more money > finding cheaper ways to obtain more meat > lots of profit

I suppose they call it "American" because it is a thick cut and served with what an uninformed foreigner would think is the usual accompaniment for steak.  In America, you can order your steak by the ounces and cut of meat usually starting at 6oz ladies or petite cuts up to 15-16 oz Cowboy cuts, as they are sometimes called).  It's called customer service here... offering the customer a choice of what they might like so they can please a variety of people.  As far as the fries and onion rings... they are usually served with burgers not steaks, although they are sometimes an option.  Americans often have a baked potato and salad with steak.  

  The American people like the Brittish very much so let's not take to jabbing at each other when the world is in such need of people who coexist peacefully.

In Texas everything is bigger small men can have their lean chicken on asparagus, in Texas we have big appetites and need big meals to fill em up (lol j/k).   It probably wouldn't be so hard on your stomach if you eat them more often.  The steak is eaten very often here and the appetite for it tends to grow.

I look at it as being frugal in the sense that you can take home what you can't eat and have another couple of meals from it and possibly feed some pets!

WE ARE OVERWIEIGHT PIGS.  Americans think they need to overeat.  Food is indulgence.  We overeat just we overdo everything.  Too much too loud too late.  Some are over anxious abouth their weight.  I dont think it is just an American thing though.  Do just French people eat French fries?

Personally, I have been down the Wink and I quite liked my first American, then you realise that actually they have very little substance.  I find them a bit tough and fatty and feel like I can never eat a whole one!

We reached the limit of what people would pay for smaller portions so we increased portion sizes to et people willing to pay more until eventually we got them used to eating more and thus needing to buy more. It started with the fast food industry and spread out to everything else.

Its not really a steak. It is 8 Mcdonalds hamburgers stuck together, with a bucket of KFC fries put into the cardnboard bucket from Wendy`s. This is the perfectly normal breakfast for any yankee !!!

Normally followed up with 28 pancakes with maple syrup, gulped down with 15 cups of coffee.

Sounds like a great meal to me, you should invite your family and gobble one down together. I've personally never been to America, so could not attest to the size of their portions over there.

In the U.S., steaks come in a variety of thicknesses and portion size.  Sometimes it's too much and other times not.  Portion size in restaurants, in the U.S. in general are too big.  This sounds like a marketing ploy to me, but although the U.S. isn't too popular abroad these days, it is working.  I'd share it with a friend.

Yep. They do indeed serve steaks like that here in America. It is disgustng to a lot of us, and certainly something I could not eat. Thank the beef lobby for that!  They even have contests in some restaurants where if a person can finish one of a certain size they win something. It is really too much.

This is not America-bashing. It is fact. But I did not think England was following us that closely. How disappointing.
