  1. No, the marriage license gives you permission to marry...you must now get married by a state certified officiate who can perform marriages legally...a clergyman, a Justice of the peace, a judge.... until then the proper paper cannot be filed and your marriage cannot be registered as taken place...until then you are NOT married.

Once the ceremony is preformed, the license signed by the officiate and witnesses, you file it in the county the marriage took place within the time frame given...you will then receive your certificate of marriage prooving the marriage is on file with the county....it does not get re-newed every year like a dog license. The marriage will be intact until a divorce is granted, if granted.

You have one year to say 'I do'...after that you need to re-apply. You're

lucky, in NY state you have only 60 days to use it before applying again.

  2. I've heard talk about places with 7 year licenses, but never anything about 1 year.  Mainly they are there because of divorce rates.. After the term is up, if they decide they want to go their seperate ways then there is no long divorce process.. If they want to stay together, then it can be renewed.

  3. No No No - The form expires.  Once the license is issued you have a certain amount of time to get married and file the license with the court or it's on longer valid and you'd have to get a new license to have your ceremony..  Once it is completed and filed with the clerk of court you are married forever or until you get divorced whichever comes first.

  4. It simply means that you have to get married within a year of the license being issued.

And if you're not only asking this question, but asking "good 'til divorce" instead of "good for life," are you sure you should be getting married if you're that sure the wedding will end in divorce?

  5. Yeah, you have to get a new license every year.

  6. Is that true? I'm from az and I've never heard that...and the driver's licenses last for like 50 years, so if that is true about the wedding licenses that definitely does not make sense.

  7. Shoot in Texas they are only 30 days... and no you don't have to get remarried every year.. that's just how long the state has given you to get married.

  8. I was married in Arizona....and it's still good!

    Who told you that?

If this is true I would like to know!

I wish you the best of luck!

  9. The license is what you need in order to have a valid and legal marriage.  The laws vary in the US (and other countries) from state to state, but generally the license (which is what allows the marriage to be performed) is only valid for a set period of time.  That means, that if you don't have the marriage performed and the license recorded in the county courthouse where it was issued within a certain time period (some states it's 30 days, some it's a year), then the license must be reissued.  You can get married without a license, but the marriage isn't legal, nor is it recognized as a legal marriage in case of divorce, inheritance, etc.

Once your wedding is performed, the officiant is usually the person who will file the license with the correct government office to legalize the marriage.  Then he/she will have the government send you the final copy of the marriage certificate which indicates you're legally married.

No, you don't have to get married every year.  Once you're married, you are until death or divorce.

  10. If you have to ask a silly question like this, you are not smart enough to be married.  In Missouri they are only good for 60 days.
