Because they're a part of our history and heritage- we wouldn't be where we are today without the royals.

Plus, they bring the tourists in. ;)

Edit: And no, we're not obsessed. Put it this way: the Yanks put up with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. Compared to them, liking the royals is easy, even if they are a little overpaid.

I don't know anyone who's obsessed with them, but they're a much better alternative than a c**p president.  We've got too many politicians and if you look at the elected presidential scum around the world, we're better off with a Royal Family to protect us from a President Blair.

Also they cost less money than the President of France and other such types.

We're not .. as you say, they don't do anything to help Joe Public ..directly..and the Goverment they approve of just walks all over the prols and bleeds them dry.. certainly nothing to warrant an obsession ... I agree some folk will respect the current Queen ..after Her Majesty I can't forsee anyone having any reason to support the rest of 'em ..

im british and im not obsessed at all, americans seem to have more of a thing than the british i think.

i think british people like the royal family because of the history involved and the tourists and revenue they bring to the uk.

whilst i wouldnt like to see britian becoaming a republic (god help us if we have to rely on gordon brown to run the country unsupervised!!) i do sometimes ownder why we bother, particularly when most of the coverage in the press is either about dianas death or the latest royal to get plastered in a club and make a prat out of themselves.

they are embassaders for the country and do keep relations with other countries on a friendly basis. We lose traditions everyday from nursery ryhmes being banned because they arent pc to shops being allowed to open on sundays,

britian is slowly loosing its identity and fast becoming the cess pit of europe and should we loose the royal family then i think that will be the final nail in our coffin!

I'm not pro the royal family in particular. However, do you understand what a constitutional monarchy is? This is what we have in the UK. Perhaps we should go for an all out commercial style/ form of government like the USA. Personally, I like the way the constitutional monarchy gives a balance between parliament and the monarchy. I think it provides the government with a check and balance that it definitely needs.

Most British are tolerant of the Royals (well of the Queen at least), they are part of our long history when all is said and done.....and I'd rather we had her than a President Blair or Brown...perish the thought.

Here in Scotland I don't know very many who are, the English seem loathe to part with them, god knows why as it would be difficult to find a less endearing bunch of spongers, no matter how hard you tried .,,,,I love insulting the monarchy, talk about knickers in a twist !

I'm not obsessed though I would be the first to admit that I will miss her majesty when she finally goes or dies. Then we will see what will happen then.

We will hopefully still keep the monarchy but it would have to be modernised to suit the needs of the country. And I would hate to think that we would lose all the traditions of this country as we have precious little of them left anyway.

Also modernise the way politics are run and also the legal system fast.

Nobody I know is obsessed including me.  I think they more than earn their keep.  The Queen has been a remarkable monarch and I have an abiding affection for  her.  A lot of people on here are envious and keep on about what the monarchy cost us but they have no knowledge of the hard work they carry out, or the inclination to find out.
