1. There is a simply wonderful book writen by Carl Hiassen called "Hoot". Though this book is fiction, the information you seek in in there.

  2. I do not know why they are extinct. I did not know there was a burrowing owl.

  3. Endangered species are classified in two general ways, Nationally listed and Locally Listed.

Species that are listed nationally are in decline and are in danger of becoming extinct (i.e. the Bald Eagle, Humpback Whales, Monk Seals).

Species can also be locally listed which means that a certain species may be rare or endangered just in that area, but still be considered abundant in another.

I would check to see if there is a local or state agency with a wildlife management website for more info.

  4. We are encroaching on their territory more than just killing them. Similar to the reduction in Mountain Lions in California.

  5. Habitat destruction leaving them no where to "burrow" and raise young. They are actually not endangered everywhere, it varies from state to state. Ways to protect them would be to conserve habitat, and by putting in artificial burrows for them to use to raise their young.
